The Field of Readers

You no doubt have heard of The Field of Dreams, but have you heard of The Field of Readers? On November 9, 2010, Midlothian ISD, hosted its Fourth Annual Field of Readers event.

The Field of Readers is a high energy, community wide event hosted by Midlothian ISD. It is the product of a group of very talented and dedicated individuals: the MISD Library Media Specialists.

The goals for the event are (1) to promote reading and other activities in a family-friendly atmosphere, and (2) to conduct a membership drive (free library cards) for Meadows Library – the city/school library.

Participants can bring blankets and books, head to the football playing surface at the MISD Multi-Purpose Stadium and read books. Kids can take part in many other activities – playing football, listening to the middle school bands, going through the Panther Football Run-Through, and purchasing books at the half-price book fair.

The first year 500 people attended. This year 1,131 people came to the event.

The Field of Readers is an award winner. It won the Highsmith Award for innovative community involvement from the Texas Library Association (TLA).

Thank you to our Library Media Specialists for creating and continuing such a special event: The Field of Readers.
