Jim Collins in his book, How The Mighty Fall, describes a five-stage framework of institutional decline. The first stage is pride. Pride is a sense of arrogance where success is seen as an entitlement.
A learning organization, by its nature, resists success-by-entitlement. Its resistance rests in asking hard questions: “Who are we?”, and “Why do we exist?”
The answers to those questions … the honest, soul-searching answers … require not only a historical perspective (the past informing the present and future) but an understanding of institutional purpose.
Jim Collins reports pride as a first stage in five-stage framework. It mirrors what was recorded thousands of years ago: “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall,” (Proverbs 16:18).
Past and present report that pride is a first step on a slippery downward slope. It is a cautionary note worth heeding.
