This is the twenty-second in a series of blogs on the ease of reading the words of Jesus in the book of Matthew … and the difficulty of following them.
Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves…. By their fruits you will know them.
First, there are false prophets. God would’t say beware of them if there were no false prophets of which to beware.
Second, it can be hard, very hard, to tell the sheep from the wolf in sheep’s clothing. That’s what sheep’s clothing is all about: a disguise to keep from being recognized.
It would be so much easier to recognize a false prophet if he carried a large sign with on it the words “False Prophet” boldy displayed. But he doesn’t. Instead, he looks like the real thing.
So, what to do?
God tells us to look at the fruits (i.e. their works) of the false prophets and “by their fruits you will know them.”
Again, so much easier to read than to do.
