“I’d Rather Be Defined By What I’ve Gained Rather Than What I Lost.”

Brian Gillette shared these words in his 2014 Bushland ISD (Texas) valedictorian speech: “I’d rather be defined by what I’ve gained rather than what I lost.”

After the speech, Brian was given a standing ovation.

The entire community knew that Brian and his siblings lost a lot on an early (1 a.m. app. ) August morning in 2010. That was when local law enforcement personnel discovered that the Gillette’s father had murdered their mother in the garage.

Those in attendance knew the loss and recognized with a standing ovation the courage it took to say, “I’d rather be defined by what I’ve gained rather than what I lost.”
